Råk i Dicksonfjorden/ open channel in the ice in Dicksonfjorden

UNIS made a channel in the sea ice in Dicksonfjorden on 8 April with the vessel RV Lance. The vessel stopped at the position: N 78 41,9380' E015 18,8530'. RV Lance left the ice on 10 April. The ice thickness in the area where the vessel stopped is about 35cm. The ice thickness farther out in the fjord is significantly lower with water on the ice. The map image shows the channel in the ice and the position of the vessel. The ice thickness has not been growing in the last period and the channel in the ice will probably still be open.

There are bergschrund and crevasses in the whole southern part of the glacier leading up to Nordenskiöldtoppen. The dangerous areas are not visible in the terrain because of the snow cover. On Sunday 6 April 2014 a skier fell into a crevasse in position N78 10.95 E15 26.55 The stippled line shows the ridge and the red circle shows where the skier fell into the crevasse.
